Was looking forward to trying the 1979 series after having had a Partagas 150 with a 1977 Cameroon wrapper several years ago. I saw the package which included the Robusto 1979 and it was a no brainer, so I thought, because you get 15 added Rocky Patel cigars for a few bucks vs. buying a 5 pack on its own. What I got looked great until I lit up two of the 1979s ... they were very dry right out of the package and both had a cooked/uneven burn. Very weird because Rocky Patel usually, if nothing else, burn evenly. My guess is that the Robusto size is the least desired as many of the other sizes are sold out so maybe these sit longer and dry out? In addition, I did some research on these and the company makes no claims that the wrapper is from 1979. It says that in the Vintage line, the brand blends cigars to be similar to a 1979 flavor. I wrote Rocky Patel to ask if the wrapper was from 1979 like the Partagas 150 was from 1977 or if it was a blemd to recreate the 1979 flavor. I received no response. Other chat boards seem to favor that these are blended to mirror the cigars of that year vs. being aged 40 years, which makes sense given the price but feels misleading and gimmicky. The other cigars are decent smokes but maybe not cigars I'd normally smoke. Beyond the uneven burn, this was a strong cigar ... what I'd definitely consider a full bodied cigar. I got almost lightheaded halfway through, so if you like a big, bold cigar such as a CAO Flathead, you might like these. Further evidence these may not have a wrapper aged 40 years as it would be more mild/medium if a Cameroon aged that long. It had a semi-unpleasant petrol odor towards the back third of the cigar. Would I buy these again? No. If you like bold cigars and have a good humidor which can restore dry cigars, it might be a good bundle to try. But I'm a bit over the gimmicks cigar brands are using to sell cigars these days.
