April 2023 - Humidity is Key!

Proper humidification is one of the keys to cigar enjoyment. Levels that are too low can lead to dry, brittle cigars. Levels that are too high can lead to spongy cigars, mold, or tobacco beetles. So, let’s talk humidification options.

You may have noticed the humidification pack in your box, these packs by Boveda offer one of the easiest ways to ensure that your cigars are kept at the humidity level you prefer. How do these packs work? Well, Boveda is the only patented product to offer 2-way humidity control. This process allows your pack to continually respond to ambient conditions by adding or removing moisture to the environment to meet the pack’s relative humidity (RH) level. Now that you know how Boveda packs work, your next question may be how many packs should you use? You can never use too many, the more you put in your humidor the longer they will last.

A small 8-gram pack would be perfect for a small travel case carrying 5 cigars.

Our recommendations are based on the number of cigars being stored: for every 25 cigars one 60-gram pack or from 25 to 125 cigars one 320-gram pack. Boveda packs are accurate to +/-2% of the RH on the pack.

Crystal gel options by HUMI-CARE® offer a variety of products to meet your needs. Options include gel beads, gel-filled panels, and portable pillows. With any of these options all you need to do is add the described amount of distilled water and the gel will expand absorbing the water. The gel is made of specially formulated crystals containing propylene glycol. The gel releases moisture and maintains a constant humidity of 65-70%.

Thompson also offers electric humidification products by Cigar Oasis and HUMI-CARE®. With options like WiFi, internal backup batteries, and oversized water tanks to keep your humidors in tip top shape.

Featured Brand - Drew Estate Undercrown Maduro

Drew Estate Undercrown Maduro Cigars
Size Strength Origin
Gran Toro (6" x 52) Medium-Full Nicaragua
Wrapper Binder Filler
San Andres Connecticut, Habano Brazilian, Nicaraguan

Most of the cigar world knows the history of Drew Estate, from its founding in NYC by fraternity brothers Jonathan Drew and Marvin Samel in 1996, to introducing the extremely popular and highly-rated brands ACID and Liga Privada. While ACID was an infused game-changer, it was the Liga Privada brand that ushered the company into the premium handmade cigar space. The wildly-popular brand plays a big role in the development of Drew Estate’s Undercrown line. Liga Privada was so popular with the rollers, that they were asked to smoke less of them because they were depleting the inventory.

Despite their disappointment, the rollers put their years of experience to good use and went to work on blending a cigar that would be their own signature Liga. The blend used many of the same rare tobaccos as the Liga Privada, just from different vintages and primings. The result was Undercrown Maduro. This beauty is of the same uncompromising quality cigar aficionados have come to expect from the company. The blend features some of the best Nicaraguan tobacco paired with Brazilian Mata Fina long-fillers that are surrounded by a dark San Andrés maduro wrapper. The blend creates an unmatched medium to full-bodied profile with sweet nuances from the maduro wrapper. The Undercrown Maduro received a 91-rating, earning a spot in the Top 25 Cigars of 2017.
